In order to build a custom Issue and generate a notification
on a NetMRI, the device has to be one of the devices that NetMRI is currently
collection SNMP information. There are several steps to run through to get this
setup.
1. 1.
Change the device Type of the device to a Type
that NetMRI will generate an issue.
2. 2.
Create the Event Analysis Issue
3. 3.
Define the Event Analysis Symptom
4. 4.
Create a new Device Group for these devices
5. 5.
Suppress Issues for these devices that do not
apply to them
So the challenge is how to get a notification that my UPS is
on battery, when UPSes are not devices that are fully supported by NetMRI?
To start with you have tell the NetMRI that the device is a
device type that is currently supported. For the sake of this exercise I
changed the device type of all the UPSes in the Netcordia network to be of type
“Wireless AP”. You will see why I chose
this as we move through the process.
So how do we make that change? The first thing we need to do
is open the “Device Viewer” and then under “Device” “Settings” you can change
the “Type” to “Wireless AP” and then click on “Update”

You will have to repeat this process for each device you
would like to generate issues and receive notifications. Now we have the
devices identified as a device type that the NetMRI will generate issues.
Now we need to create the Event Analysis Issue. From the top
menu select “Results” “Events” “Issue Mgt”
and then at the bottom of the screen press “Add Issue”

You will need an ID, Title and Description for the issue.
For this exercise I selected Component “Devices” and I will have this affect my
score card as it relates to stability. Press the “OK” button.
Now we are going to create an Event Syptom. From the top
menu select “Results” “Events” “Event Symptoms” at the bottom of the screen
press the “Add Symptom” button.
The “Search Criteria” is the actual text from the syslog
message that you want to be the cause of this issue. If you do not know the
syntax, use the “Event Browser” to find a message and copy the syntax directly.
In this case there is a follow up syslog message when the UPS goes back onto to
normal power so that is what I am using to clear the issue. I am generating an
issue as well as sending an email notification.

Since I am telling NetMRI that my APC UPSes are Wireless AP,
Wireless AP issue may start to fire for my UPSes and I do not want that to
happen. To solve this I created a device group called “APC UPS” with a rank
just above the “Wireless” group. From
the top this is found by “Results” “Network” “Device Groups” and then there is
a “Generate Groups” button. The setting for my group are below and for yours
they may differ but the concept is the same.

Now we need to suppress the Wireless issues for this Group.
From the Groups list select the APC UPS group an the on the upper right hand
side of the window select “Settings” and then select “Edit Issue Criteria”

For my example I suppressed all the Wireless issues. The
reason we made the rank of the APC UPS group a little bit greater than the “Wireless”
group was so we can do just this. For more detailed info on Device Groups
please refer to chapter 17 of the NetMRI User Manual.
